The Nigerian Bar Association, Nyanya-Karu Branch (Innovative Bar), has filed a Fundamental Human Rights Enforcement action on behalf of Barr. Nneka Asadu, Esq., against the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, DIG Benjamin Nebolisa Okolo, the Inspector-General of Police, and five others.
The suit, filed today at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division, and assigned *Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/2175/2025,* was instituted through *Barr. Nkem Okoro, Esq.,* a member of the Branch, acting pro bono on behalf of the Branch.
The Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police (Legal), DIG Benjamin Nebolisa Okolo, ACP Nwiche Angus, CSP Segun Aderoju, and SUPOL Michael (IPO) are listed as respondents in the action.
In the suit, We are seeking, among other reliefs:
1. A declaration that her arrest and detention by the Respondents from Thursday, 9th October 2025, without being charged to court, is illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional.
2. A declaration that the remand order obtained by the Respondents from a Magistrate Court to detain her was unconstitutional and void.
3. An order directing the Respondents to publicly apologise to her in at least two national dailies.
4. An order awarding ₦100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) each against the Respondents as general and exemplary damages for the violation of her fundamental rights.
5. An order restraining the Respondents from further arresting or detaining her on the same facts without due process of law.
The case was filed earlier today, and following notice of the imminent suit, the Police released Barr. Nneka Asadu, Esq., who has since returned home to her family.
Our learned colleague remains physically unwell and emotionally traumatized by her ordeal but is *deeply grateful to the Branch for its swift and resolute intervention, which secured her freedom.*
