4th September, 2025

Recall that that Maduabuchi Idam Esq (public interest lawyer) had earlier petitioned the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, on the 4th of August, 2025 on the need to ban or regulate the contents of Big Brother Naija reality television show.
Idam said the programme should be banned or regulated for promoting obscene, indecent, and profane content in line with the NBC Act of 1999.
Following the expiration of the Thirty (30) Days pre-action notice on the 3rd of September, 2025 without the Commission’s compliance, Maduabuchi Idam Esq has as a gesture of goodwill served additional Notice of Seven (7) days to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
See his full message and the letter served below;
As a gesture of goodwill, I have served additional Notice of Seven (7) days to the National Broadcasting Commission Headquarters, Abuja. (NBC), following the expiration of my Thirty (30) Days pre-action notice on the 3rd of September 2025 without the Commission’s compliance, despite the assurances conveyed through its response.
I believe this additional notice will enable the Commision finalize its review and therefore make appropriate decisions inrespect of my demand.
For want of clarity, my demand has not changed: a strict regulation of the Big Brother Naija reality show or a total ban, whichever will suitably address the public obscenity which the program is characterised by.
Apart from the hazard that the program poses to our society, as a citizen of Nigeria, my rights to freedom of thought, conscience and belief have been recklessly violated by the indiscriminate broadcast of the explicit program not only on its purported designated channel but also on various television channels such as Hip TV, African Magic, etc and in public places such as gardens, restaurants, saloons, malls etc.
Without more, the social media space has also become a duping ground for the broadcast of this unethical program, thereby making it extremely difficult for me to carry on my belief and plan for the future of my children without fear of compromise
May good reasoning guide us.
M.O.Idam
